How Americano works

Everyone goes into one pool. New pairs are formed for each round from a fixed rotation, not at random.

The rotation comes from tournament scheduling and is called the circle method: one person stays put while everyone else shifts one seat along. Each round produces a fresh, complete set of partnerships, and after enough rounds everyone has partnered everyone.

With P players a full cycle takes P−1 rounds. Eight players means seven rounds; most groups play only part of that and score from there.

Scoring

Each match runs to a fixed score, often 16, 21 or 24. Both teams keep the points they won, credited to each player individually.

Because partners keep changing, the luck of drawing a strong or weak partner evens out over the evening. That is what makes the final Americano table a fair read on individual form.

No court hierarchy

Unlike Mexicano, Americano has no promotion or relegation between courts. No court outranks another — the schedule alone decides who plays where.

That makes Americano ideal for groups of a similar level and for meet-the-club evenings. If the field is very mixed, Mexicano usually produces the closer games.

Player numbers and byes

Americano runs cleanest with a multiple of four: four players on one court, eight on two, twelve on three.

With other numbers some players sit out each round. Here too the byes must rotate so nobody waits twice in a row.
